Pascal Frossard is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Electrical Engineering Institute of EPFL since 2006, where he heads the Signal Processing Laboratory (LTS4). His research interests include image and video processing and coding, visual information stream analysis, non-linear representations for visual information, multimedia communications, rich media
streaming, error control algorithms, multimedia content
distribution, and information theory.
He got his M.Sc. and Ph.D., both in Electrical Engineering, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1997 and 2000 respectively. In 1998, he graduated from the Doctoral School of the Communications Systems Division of EPFL. Then he started his PhD with the Signal Processing Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, where he was involved in a joint partnership between Hewlett-Packard and EPFL. The topic of his PhD research was on error-resilient and multi-resolution video communications. Between 2001 and 2003, he has been with the Media
Delivery Architectures Department of the IBM
TJ Watson Research Center (Yorktown Heights, NY, USA),
where he mainly worked on media compression, streaming technologies and delivery architectures (iSee, SENDS and ARMS projects). In 2003, he joined the Signal Processing Institute of EPFL as head of the LTS4 laboratory, under a professorship grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS).
Among other technical activities, Pascal Frossard has been the General
Chair of ICME 2002 (Lausanne, Switzerland, August 2002). He organized the Packet Video workshop in 2007, and served as Technical Program Chair of EUSIPCO 2008. He has served in numerous organization or technical program committees, such as IEEE ICIP, IEEE ICASSP or IEEE ICME. He serves or has served as Guest Editor of special issue on 'Interactive Multimedia Conferencing', IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, Guest Editor of special issue on 'Distributed Image Processing and Communications', IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (submission deadline December 2009), Guest editor of a Special issue on 'Wireless Multimedia Transmission Technology and Application', ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems Journal (submission deadline January 2010), Guest Editor of a Special issue on 'Multi-camera information processing: acquisition, collaboration, interpretation and production', EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing (submission deadline December 2009), Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation (Resource-Aware Adaptive Video Streaming, December 2008), Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting (Quality Issues in Multimedia Broadcasting, September 2008), Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the Computer Networks Journal (Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks, April 2008, lead Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (Cross-Layer Optimized Wireless Multimedia Communications, May 2007), Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the Signal Processing: Image Communications Journal (Mobile Video, Spring 2007), Guest
Editor of a Special Issue of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia
(Streaming
Media, April 2004), Guest Editor of a Special Issue of
the Journal of VLSI Signal Processing Systems for Signal,
Image, and Video Technology (Media
and Communication Applications on General Purpose Processors:
Hardware and Software Issues, September 2005) and
Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the Journal of Signal Processing
(Image and Video Coding Beyond Standards, November 2002).
He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (2004-), and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (2006-). He has been an Associate Editor of the Computer Networks Journal (Elsevier) (2007-2008) and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Advances in Multimedia (2006-2009). He also served as a member of the Editorial Board of the EURASIP Journal of Signal Processing (2003-2005).
He is an elected member of the IEEE Image and MultiDimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee (2007-), of the IEEE Visual Signal Processing and Communications Technical Committee (2006-), of the IEEE Multimedia
Signal Processing Technical Committee (2004-2007), and of the IEEE Multimedia Systems and Applications Technical Committee (2005-). He has been serving as Vice-Chair of the IEEE
Multimedia Communications Technical Committee (chair of the Media Streaming Interest Group) between 2004 and 2006. He has chaired between 2005 and 2007 the steering committee of the IEEE ICME conference, the IEEE multimedia conference, co-sponsored by the Circuits and Systems, Communications, Computer and Signal Processing Societies.
In 2005, he received the prestigious IBM Faculty Award, that recognizes the quality of his research, and its importance to IBM Research strategy. He received in 2008 the Exploratory Stream Analytics Innovation Award from IBM Research.
